Colorado to California - Changes to our Workamper Lifestyle!

We have been on a whirlwind of changes!

It has been a while since I have blogged as we have been extremely busy with lots of changes happening! I even thought of possibly dropping the blog as there is so much else going on right now, but in the end I really enjoy sharing our travels and adventures and I am going to try to keep this up as much as I can!

We have some friends that started managing a campground in Desert Hot Springs, California and we were lucky enough to get jobs there! We met Ralph and Lori on a workamping job about two years ago and we all just hit it off. We have the same work ethic, same drive to make the most out of life, and the same yearning to have fun! So when they offered us jobs to come work with them, it was a great opportunity we just couldn't pass up! We have never been workamping in California so this was a great chance to do some exploring!

We had a great summer working again in Estes Park, Colorado. We actually worked at the place we had worked our very first workamping job - Rockmount Cottages. We cleaned their beautiful cabins 6 days a week. It was physical work but we were done with the cleaning most days by about 1 so there is lots of time to explore the amazing Rocky Mountains! I would highly recommend working in Estes Park and at Rockmount Cottages! And the hiking is amazing!

We left Estes Park on September 27th after kind of a rocky start to our morning. As we were going through town some very kind gentleman flagged us down and told us one of our tires on the 5th wheel had a bulge in it. We pulled over and sure enough one of the tires on the inside had a fairly large bulge. Thank God  he saw it and told us! I'm not sure what would have happened if that tire had blown out going down the mountain! We have never had to use our spare tire in the past 4 years since we have been on the road. But this summer as we were parked, we heard a big pop at the back of the camper and our spare blew out! We had it covered but I suppose the heat and aging got to it and it blew. We debated about whether we really needed to spend the money to replace it - I'm sure glad we did!

After changing the tire things went smoothly after that but we were very careful, as we always do, at every stop checking tires, etc.  We continued on our journey south from Estes Park on Highway 36 to Interstate 25 and went south all the way through Denver and to Santa Fe the first night. It is a beautiful drive with lots of mountain views along the way, trees, and purple flowers along the roadside.  We saw quite a few vehicles pulling balloons going to the Albuquerque Balloon Festival!

We stopped outside of Santa Fe at Rancheros Campground for the night. This was a very nice campground and friendly staff for about $45 for the night. The office/store had some food, souvenirs, t-shirts, etc and was nice and clean. The roads were a little tight but we managed to fit into the last site available. We went into Santa Fe to get gas and view the sites for a bit before it got dark.  Santa Fe is definitely on my bucket list of places to explore more!

We continued on the next day through Albuquerque and on to Interstate 40. We stopped at Sky City Travel on Exit 102 for gas and bathroom break. It seemed like a clean place and there was a Casino, Hotel and RV Park there also. Seems like it would be a good place to stop for the night if  you ever find  yourself passing through. Then onto Flagstaff, Arizona. It is such a pretty town with all the pine trees and hills. We also enjoyed seeing Williams, Arizona. Doug thought it reminded him of the Rockies with the Aspens changing colors and the trees. We made it to Kingman, Arizona for the night and stayed at Sunrise RV Park. It was good enough for the night and the fee was about $42.  Looked like quite a few permanent residents there.

We were excited the next morning to head out on the last leg of our trip and took Highway 95 down through Lake Havasu and Quartzite. Lake Havasu is as beautiful and spectacular as I had hoped it would be! We were also very impressed with Parker. Looks like there are a lot of great campgrounds in the area right on the water - added to Bucket List!

Quartzite was an interesting place! We only stopped for gas but you could see lots of campgrounds at very reasonable prices. I would love to go back during the height of the winter season to see all the snowbirds!

We made it to Desert Hot Springs, California about 2 in the afternoon and were so excited to see our friends smiling faces!  We got the quick run down of the place and headed to our site! It is called Hidden Sands Golf and Racquet Club. There are park models here as well as RVs along with a 9 hole golf course, swimming pool, hot tubs, and lots of activities. All of the sites are surrounded by Oleander bushes so it is very private. Love the palm trees! It is very scenic with two mountain ranges all around us! It is in the desert so there will be some adjustment to the heat - but it is a dry heat - and yes it does make a difference not to have the humidity!

We are working full-time jobs here instead of workamping jobs and plan on staying a while to settle into the area and save up a little money!  It took us a while to adjust to the weather, the time change, and working 40 hours a week but we seem to have gotten into a pretty good groove and are anxious to get out and explore the area! There are lots of hiking in the mountains all around us and Palm Springs is only about 12 miles away with lots of shopping, great restaurants and of course the great vintage vibe!

I look forward to sharing all of our adventures here in Southern California! Happy Trails!

7 Tips for Running a Business While Workamping

Do you run a business on the side while workamping? It's not easy to maintain a workamping job and try to start or run a side business of your own. Businesses like Etsy, E-bay, Amazon, Mary Kay, VA, and blogging usually have a learning curve until you figure out all the policies, processes, marketing, etc.

In order to continue our travels as workampers or full-time RVers, sometimes it requires us to have a business on the side.  These extra jobs, mostly online, allow us to maintain our lifestyle and make a little bit extra.

It takes a lot of time and energy to run a business and workamp at the same time. We always work jobs that pay so that job has to be the priority in our life and the side business kind of takes a back seat. It is very difficult to set up a routine each day because of the variation in hours, jobs, etc., but it is absolutely necessary to try to stick to a schedule. I usually try to block out some time, even if it is only an hour every day, and really try to concentrate on the task at hand whether it is making new items, taking photos, listing products, writing a blog, etc.  It can also get distracting when you want to go to the beach, hiking, happy hour, or shopping! But you can get it all done and enjoy your workamping lifestyle, if you schedule it!

This Lifestyle is a Balancing Act Sometimes!

Most of the experts that give advice to new business owners will tell you to get into a routine, get up early, get regular sleep, regular exercise, etc. Although great advice, sometimes it is not always possible when you are workamping! You may have varying shifts like working early in the morning or late at night, schedules can vary from day to day, vary on how many hours a week you work, and what days you have off.  Some of our jobs we didn't have the same days off each week and some days we didn't know which days we had off until a couple days before! That of course is not ideal but it is the reality of some workamping jobs.

The best "creative entrepreneurs" have some great advice that I believe also fits for us Workampers:

1. Keep a journal of your daily plans and thoughts, especially new ideas for your business, write them down as soon as you think of them. So many times I have gone back to look at my notes and ideas on a certain project. I also need to keep a journal just so I can remember all the great things we have done!

2. Keep a planner and calendar to schedule ALL of your activities including work schedule, dinner plans, travel time, and of course work time for your business. Put work time for your business into your planner and stick to it as best you can. It's amazing how much time I can waste watching TV or getting lost in social media!

3. Set a timer for a certain amount of time such as 60 minutes to concentrate only on one task for that time period. No distractions - no phone, no checking email, no snacks, no bathroom breaks!

4. Fill out a Brain Dump to write down everything you have going on in your head. That includes your workamping job, social activities, ideas that pop up, business activities, marketing, sales, etc. for your business. Once it is down on paper you don't have to keep reminding yourself of those things that need your attention.

5. Learn new things every chance you get! Whether it is a computer class, yoga, business skills, computer program, photography skills, etc. It may be difficult at first but that is why they call it learning. Check out local classes offered or you can pretty much learn anything you want online!

6. Set goals for your business especially when you get started. What do you want your business to look like down the road in 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year?  Project where you want to be financially, creatively, geographically, and emotionally. Then review those goals every couple months and see if you are on track.

7. Organize your computer and phone including photos, files, clean out emails and unsubscribe to anything that is not relevant to your life right now. Turn off any notifications on your computer or phone that aren't urgent. If you want to be on Facebook or Pinterest, you may need to even schedule that so you don't get lost down the rabbit hole!

All of these are great ideas to help us all get organized and it is an ongoing process! It seems there is always a new paper blizzard brewing in my little home!

THE 2017 PLANNER IS HERE!

Welcome to 2017! It’s hard to believe another year has gone by, but I think I say that every year! The older I get the faster the years go by and I realize I need to enjoy every moment and every experience. The RVing Lifestyle certainly provides for many great experiences! 2016 has been an amazing ride and I am so glad I could track it all in my Planner!

The 2017 RVers Planner is here and available to you! My main goal was to make this 2017 Planner easy to use. The last thing I want this to be is another chore to add to your list of things to do. It is fairly simple yet has all the info in one spot.  The Planner includes monthly and weekly calendars along with all my Worksheets. It will be your go-to place for everything you keep track of – appointments, work schedules, workamping jobs, travel plans, new friends, RV maintenance, health and insurance info, pet info, etc. After using this Planner myself and listening to recommendations from other users, I have tweaked and added a few new things this year.

An exciting new option this year is that this Planner will be offered as a Digital Download OR a Printed Physical Product! The digital product will be available for download immediately and the physical product will be for pre-orders up until December 10th with shipping provided within 5 days. Of course the Printed Planner will cost more but it will be a very nice spiral bound book all ready for you to personalize! It is 100 pages printed in color. You will have all of your Calendars and Worksheets in one place so you can fill them out and have them whenever needed!

NEW this year is more of a focus on tracking money and expenses. That seems to be one of the biggest challenges for many RVers – keeping track of where our money goes and how much we have left for fun stuff!  I have developed a new Expense Worksheet which will only be included in this 2017 Planner!  The Expense Worksheet is included for each month and lists all of your possible expenses as an RVer such as Site Rent, Utilities, RV Maintenance, Health Insurance, etc. There is also an area for Notes, Amount Paid, and the Date Paid. A final Expense Worksheet is included for the end of the year if you would like to total your expenses for the year.

This new Expense Worksheet coordinates with the Weekly Calendar pages as I have added a block to jot down your weekly expenses. This is an informal spot that you can write down expenses as they occur and not necessarily your monthly bills, things like groceries, dinner out, etc. The blocks related to Money are in Red.

The Weekly Calendar pages still include blocks for each Day of the Week, To Do List, Travel Notes, New Friends, and RV Maintenance.  Along with the new Expense block is also a new block to keep track of the hours you have worked. If you are working at a workamping job, working for yourself, or even in a contract position – it is still good to know how many hours you are actually working.  There are lots of variables as far as how workampers get paid so we usually like to keep our own records to compare with the employer when we receive our paychecks.

Of course there is a monthly calendar page for each month that includes the major holidays.

Documenting your Goals and Plans for 2017 and 2018 is included so you can plan travel, jobs, and highlights of your year ahead all on one sheet!

All of my previously released Worksheets will be included under a separate section so you have all of these Worksheets in one place! Please click on the links for more info on each Worksheet! These include:

It's 100 Pages Total! See purchase options below!
